Itinerary

Milford Sound is simply like no other place on Earth. With majestic peaks that tower hundreds of metres both above and below sea level, cascading waterfalls and pristine rainforest, it’s undoubtedly the most spectacular of New Zealand’s thirteen fiords.

Not only is the landscape phenomenal – the natural wildlife here is abundant too. Seals, dolphins and penguins can all be spotted from above the water on your scenic Fiordland Discovery overnight boat cruise, while rare black coral, lobsters and schools of fish can be viewed as the boat’s ROV (“HD ROV”- HD for “high definition” video, ROV for “remotely operated vehicle”) delves deep into the sea.

The natural wonders of Milford Sound can be enjoyed at dawn, dusk or underneath the stars on our luxury overnight boat Fiordland Jewel.

Exclusive charters are available - Day, Overnight, and Multiday – upon request.  Our cruises are guided by expert crew, are fully catered, with all equipment supplied.

Milford Sound Overnight Cruise

During this time, you’ll discover over thirteen natural wonders of Milford Sound and its surrounds, as well as a variety of flora and fauna, all from the comfort of our luxurious nine-cabin boat. Drinks and dinner are served in the evening, with a delicious breakfast the following morning.

As with any Milford Sound experience, your itinerary – including departure times, activities, number of hours cruising and mooring station – can vary depending on the weather.

A front can result in heavy rainfall and incredible waterfalls, but it can also restrict whether our vessel can travel to the mouth of the fiord. On calm days our skipper can cruise beyond the mouth of the fiord, into the Tasman Sea; on rougher days it’s more enjoyable to remain in calmer waters.

Luxury connections are available from Te Anau or Queenstown.

Day 1

  • Journey to Milford Sound with Fiordland Discovery, or by car, bus or scenic flight from Queenstown, Te Anau or Glenorchy. By land, you’ll be able to stop in the Eglington Valley and at the mouth of the Homer Tunnel. By air, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking aerial view of the mountains and valleys of Fiordland National Park.
  • 3.50pm: Meet the crew at Fiordland Discovery’s terminal office for boarding at 3.50pm. Departure is 4.30pm.
  • Cruise down the south side of the fiord, past Bowen Falls, Sinbad Gully, the world-renowned Mitre Peak, Mt Pembroke, Bridal Veil Falls and Fairy Falls.
  • If weather permits, we cruise into the mouth of the fiord past Anita Bay, and head into the Tasman Sea for a glimpse of the West Coast, before returning into the sound.
  • Venture up the north side of the fiord past Dale Point, the Piopiotahi Marine Reserve, Seal Rock, Stirling Falls, The Lion and the Cascade Range.
  • After cruising, we anchor at Harrison’s Cove or Deepwater Cove for the night. There is then the opportunity to explore nearby in the on board sea kayaks, before returning to the boat for drinks and dinner.

Day 2

  • Dawn arrives at 6am in December, but can be as late as 8am in March. Watch the sunrise over breakfast, which is served 7am-8am, before returning to the terminal at 9.20am.
  • Return to Queenstown, Te Anau or Glenorchy.
