As well as observing wildlife above the water, Fiordland Discovery shows you the fascinating world beneath the waves by using an underwater ROV or Remotely Operated Vehicle, with its high definition camera, our state-of-the-art equipment allows you to view the enchanting sea life in real time from the comfort of the boat lounge.
Everything from beautiful black coral to lobsters peering out from underwater caves, as well as a myriad of fish species. If we’re lucky, we might catch a glimpse of dolphins as they glide under the boat—or perhaps something never seen before. Please note the ROV activity is weather and time permitting, on ourluxury day cruises.
On our last vessel, in conjunction with NIWA scientists we discovered a new species in Fiordland that was featured on TV One News (New Zealand’s national news channel) including the Giant Seapens. These are deep-water plants that live on plankton at 120 metres depth.
Our state-of-the-art Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) is an unmanned, remote controlled vehicle with an HD camera, so you can view the amazing marine life from the comfort of our vessel’s lounge including rare black coral, sea urchins and various fish.
