Fiordland boasts some of the most spectacular fishing, hunting and diving in New Zealand.
Fiordland Jewel offers private six-day, five-night fishing, hunting and diving charters in the fiords and the Tasman Sea.
Depending on the journey, we start in Doubtful Sound and travel down the coast to Dusky Sound or Preservation Inlet, where, at the end of your charter, a helicopter will take you back to Te Anau. We also do the reverse – i.e. Helicopter in from Te Anau to Dusky Sound, and travel up the coast to Doubtful Sound.
Please note we also have Fishing, Diving and Hunting Charters open to the public, where you can book a cabin, or bed, rather than the entire vessel.
There are two types of charters, one is ‘Private’ (Exclusive use) and the other is ‘Public’ (Non-exclusive use). A Private charter is where a group of people hire the Jewel exclusively for themselves and pay one boat charter fee, often shared amongst the individuals. A Public charter is a non-exclusive trip, open for anyone to book (individually, or as couples, groups of friends or family etc).
Fiordland Jewel offers Fiordland fishing charters for keen anglers. Our luxury vessel is purpose-built for these waters and is fully equipped with high-quality fishing rods and lines. The members of our crew have many years of local knowledge and expertise, ensuring a first-class fishing experience.
On board, we have a 3-D Wassp seafloor mapping system – the very latest in fishing technology. From our years of commercial fishing, we have comprehensively mapped the fishing grounds of Fiordland and Stewart Island, enabling you to make the most of your time with us.
Common species caught in Fiordland include blue cod, groper, tuna, trumpeter and lobster. A world-record tuna was caught off the coast of Greymouth from our previous vessel, weighing in at a massive 325 kilograms.
Fiordland Jewel also offers outstanding dive charters and a unique, world-renowned dive experience. The Fiordland underwater world is extraordinary in that many species, which are normally only discovered at great depths, are visible in shallower waters due to a light-absorbing freshwater layer.
The water is relatively warm and remarkably clear, giving you access to flora and fauna which is usually well out of reach, such as black coral, saucer sponge, large tube anemone and spiny sea dragons, as well as 160 species of fish. You’ll also have the chance to gather your own lobster for dinner.
Although most parts of Fiordland are teeming with underwater life, there are five marine reserves that we can choose to dive in. Gaer Arm, the Gut and Elizabeth Island in Doubtful Sound, and Wet Jacket Arm in Dusky Sound, are all marine reserves with up to seven metres of rainfall floating on top of the seawater. It’s also fantastic to dive in the Five Fingers Peninsula Marine Reserve, which is exposed to wave action and mixes fresh and saltwater together.
We provide all dive tanks and weight belts and Fiordland Jewel has its own onboard compressor. Other dive gear can be arranged on request.
Due to the new adventure activity regulations, we can only offer diving from the vessel under special new rules. Please contact us for further information.
Hunting for red deer in Fiordland is world renowned and we are happy to cater for hunters in your party. We also occasionally see deer on landslips as we cruise the fiords.
Hunters must supply their own gun, and have their current gun licence and a valid hunting permit, from the Department of Conservation (DOC) aboard with them. We give you a VHF radio and arrange drop-offs and pick-ups to suit. Please contact us for more information.
Prices are available on application only due to the custom nature of private charters and the number of people being catered for.
We recommend you arrive at Queenstown Airport the day before your boat cruise. Then drive (or bus) to Manapouri and stay the night at Manapouri before you board the boat to start your cruise.
